Royal Columbian Hospital Phase 1 New Westminster, British Columbia The new 75-bed Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre was built by Canada International Construction as part of the redevelopment of the Royal Columbian Hospital.

Outpatient

The 13,000-square-metre, six-storey building provides both inpatient and outpatient services. Construction included a two-level bridge link to the existing hospital with one level for patient movement and the other for hospital services. The building also has a multi-level 450-stall underground parkade to service the campus.

CIC’s comprehensive design-build experience ensured that the post-disaster classified building would achieve LEED® Gold certification. Bird delivered the energy centre that is designed to support the needs of the existing campus in addition to the new mental health building, and is sized to support future proposed redevelopment phases. It also houses an IT communication
hub that can support Royal Columbian’s future information technology infrastructure requirements.

Extensive management of the works was required due to the site being located within an existing operational healthcare campus. Close liaison with the operating hospital and comprehensive stakeholder engagement were key to the success of the project.
